AngelNav is an emerging iOS application developed collaboratively with Tom Cunliffe, designed to serve as a comprehensive chart plotting tool with a focus on raster charts. While its primary function is that of a full-featured chart plotter, it also offers advanced capabilities for traditional navigation directly on the device's screen.

The ability to perform classical chart work—such as plotting an estimated position, drawing position lines from sighted bearings, and recording fixes—is especially valuable in the event of GPS failure. Historically, such procedures required manual instruments like pencils, plotters, and paper charts. AngelNav enables mariners to carry out these traditional techniques digitally, using an iPad or iPhone interface instead of physical charts. It also facilitates constructing course-to-steer diagrams with relative ease.

The app supports a broad range of raster chart formats, including UKHO subscription charts, KAP/BSB files, and GeoTIFF images. Additionally, similar to its macOS counterpart AngelPilot, it can create and interpret satellite charts for offline use.

AngelNav can ingest position data from various sources such as the device’s standalone GPS, NMEA data transmitted via WiFi from the vessel’s navigation systems, and SignalK protocols. It can also display AIS targets when AIS information is available, enhancing situational awareness.

The app offers a free version suitable for evaluation, providing access to core features such as a chart plotter with a demo chart, traditional navigation tools, waypoint and route management, track recording and playback, navigational data reading, and simulation mode. Additional functionalities—including opening KAP/BSB files, GeoTIFFs, satellite charts, and displaying AIS data—are available through in-app purchases.

For chart coverage in UK waters, subscription options are available through annual purchases. These subscriptions are segmented into eight folios aligned with UKHO data, allowing users to subscribe only to the specific regions they require.
